Lynnfield Public Safety
Overview
Marking the beginning on an important construction project for the Town of Lynnfield and breaking ground in April 2024, this project will modernize the Town's Public Safety buildings and Town Hall. The result will be a fully upgraded public safety complex and these renovations will serve the town's needs with great efficiency.
Lynnfield's public safety complex is composed of three buildings: Town Hall, the Police Station and the Fire Department- over two separate sites. These three buildings totaling 30,000 square feet were contracted by Commodore Builders to receive complete upgrades requiring architectural and structural demolition and select environmental remediation.

Architectural Demo
Architectural demolition, structural demolition and environmental remediation were required throughout Town Hall, and the Police and Fire Departments to provide a clean slate for the remainder of the renovation project. Unified's workforce completed a full gut of all three of these locations. This included ACT and plaster ceiling materials, gypsum walls, CMU walls, and flooring throughout.

Unique to this project were the six jail cells broken down by use of sawzalls as well a shooting range located within the police station featuring 5/8" steel plates and supports. These elements were removed by cutting and burning methods.
Structural Demo
At one of the buildings, we removed the roof composed of layers of EPDM, insulation, plywood, shingles, and a mix of wood and steel joists/ trusses surrounding CMU walls.
To support our structural demolition scope, we engaged our in-house shoring designer to design and erect a shoring system in the lower level of the Police Department which supported the structure while we demo'd a structural beam.
Shoring was also set up in the Town Hall building at both lower and upper levels for demo of select structural exterior walls.

Environmental Remediation
Across the three buildings, Unified's Environmental Remediation Division performed select remediation of various elements throughout as well as performed floor grinding across these buildings to safely remove contaminated materials.
Using our floor grinders, UCG's crews removed roughly 14,000 square feet of hazardous flooring materials under lament. All of this work was performed under full negative pressure containment. ACM and caulking were removed from 15 windows and additional abatement and was completed in all attic areas.

Exterior Demolition
Exterior demolition included, but was not limited to, the complete removal of a handicap accessible ramp as well as removal of a communications antenna located on the roof.
To access the 160 foot high antenna, our team used a 180 foot boom lift which was systematically dismantled into manageable pieces before lowering them into a designated dumpster for disposal.
Means and methods used to properly dismantle and dispose of the handicap accessible ramp included the use of a Brokk robotic demolition hammer in conjunction with skid steers to haul away the debris.

Unified is nearing completion of Phase 1 of this project which included work at the existing Town Hall along with Police and Fire Headquarters. Phase 2 is scheduled to commence sometime in early 2025 which for Unified will include the complete take down the of the existing fire station just up the road.
